Traveling the deep south?

Hi, I am thinking about traveling the deep south (Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee) on a blues cruise (love the music, culture etc). I am from England and was planning on doing this trip next year when turn 21. I was wondering if anyone can help me with some good jazz, blues clubs in and around these states also record shops, well any good places/need to know things about these places. I'm male and dont have a car so good travel infomation is what I'm after mostly, walking/busses/trains don't bother me but these places are big and I don't know if I cold go exploring in the day and get back where I'm staying by the night, (need your help on that 1). I was planning on taking about 6 months or so maybe more maybe less, and about �5000 (the mother). So any kind of help is much appreciated, especially travel and accommodation with my budget.
