Charming alcoholic?

Have you ever fallen for someone on the internet, he sounded really genuine and everything was dandy, until he decided to bail out and confessed that he was an alcoholic and that he even had a domestic violence charge against him last year (his ex-wife). For a domestic violence charge, she would ahve to be relaly blue or? I am not from US, so I am asking.
